Architect William Hefner made a stainless-steel cover plate for the hood and framed the range area with Calacatta gold marble, to balance all the wood. Wolf 60-inch range.

Nonmatching Lighting

"At first we thought all the light fixtures should match, but then we decided a different fixture over the breakfast table would create more intimacy," Hefner says. Aspen Iron ceiling lights on the left feel a little more old-fashioned than the Bryant billiard fixture, both by Visual Comfort. Wall paint is Pratt & Lambert's Chalk Gray.

Modern Cabinets and Old-Fashioned Pulls

The wood cabinets have contemporary lines but old-fashioned drop-pull handles and tongue-and-groove detailing. "It just softens it," says architect William Hefner. "I used to be pretty particular about how things got stacked inside, but now I realize it doesn't have to be perfect. It's still fine," he says.
